Let’s face it, coming up with a social media marketing strategy is overwhelming. There’s so many moving parts, you probably don’t know how to use it or more importantly why to use it.
First, let’s talk about what a social media strategy should be about – it’s about growing your followers AND driving traffic to your website. Social media platforms are amazing for increasing website traffic.
Post Google updates (Penguin, Hummingbird etc.) organic traffic (Traffic that comes from the result of people typing into the search engine a certain phrase or keyword and your website pops up.) isn’t that easy to come by these days. If you’re looking to rank for a vast search versus local it can almost seem impossible!
Which is why leveraging social media platforms in your marketing strategy are genius. Pretend for a moment that you’re in bumper-to-bumper traffic, now what if you could drive around the traffic using the shoulder and not get in trouble?
Think of using social media like that….a way to go around without waiting to be found organically and get website traffic faster. 🙂 Everyone likes that right? Okay let’s talk about how you can increase website traffic!
How a Social Media Strategy Can Increase Website Traffic
You shouldn’t let coming up with a social media strategy overwhelm you, so let me give you a boost with the right mindset. Instead of thinking about what social media is, consider what it means to your business model. Not every platform makes sense for every business when it comes to planning out a marketing strategy.
Twitter is a great tool but it doesn’t make sense for every single business model. Let’s consider lawyers using Twitter for example. I know lots of lawyers that tweet and that’s fine, especially if they enjoy communicating that way and it isn’t a huge chore for them. But I bet if they had to figure out what platforms they got clients from, it wouldn’t be Twitter.
So should they be spending time using Twitter in their marketing strategy? 🙂 I also see a lot of business owners using what I call the Spaghetti Social Media Strategy.
This means they’re just throwing things around various platforms with no real purpose or plan, sort of like throwing pasta up against the wall just to see what sticks. In this case, your efforts are extremely inconsistent so why bother? You’re doing more harm than good. The idea is to take a few different platforms that make sense for you, set up some good habits and be consistent.
Learning how to increase your website traffic is something that happens overtime with great planning. I love using platforms like SlideShare to increase website traffic! I also love these types of platforms because they make sense for every business model.
Using Presentation Platforms to Increase Website Traffic
Presentation platforms are great for so many reasons! Here’s 3 reasons why I LOVE presentation platforms:
- They increase website traffic.
- They’re a great way to get a little more bang out of my blog post. If you’re like me and you spend a ton of time working on your blog, thinking of good content ideas then of course all the time of writing it you want to maximize the effort as much as possible!
- It helps me gage my audience and find out what they’re most interested in. I can go back and see what presentations were more popular and that helps me to choose things to write about.
Take your blog post and turn it into a presentation using PowerPoint or Keynote! Now, with just a little more effort, you’ve totally repurposed your content and you’re reaching a whole other medium! Genius right?! Oh we’re just getting started! Read on! Presentation platforms can help you to:
- get more referral traffic (Traffic from social media and other sources that drives traffic to your website.)
- get more organic traffic (Regular search traffic that comes from someone doing a search and your website or other link comes up.)
- get more use out of content
- gage your audience to see what they’re interested in by seeing which presentations are more popular
- reach a whole other audience
- grow your followers
- get more email subscribers
- grow your brand awareness
Which Presentation Platforms to Use?
There are lots of presentation sites out there – more seem to be popping up everyday.
My strategy is to keep it simple. I have three platforms that I upload presentations to which are the most popular and they serve me very well. SlideShare has changed a little bit over the last year for the good!
The service, which has over 60 million users, is now FREE. It dropped all its PRO tiers, once priced at $19/month and $49/month, and making extra features like analytics, which used to come at a price, free for all. They’re now getting their revenue from paid advertising efforts which I haven’t yet tried, but only because I haven’t gotten around to it. It’s definitely on my list of things to do.
A HUGE plus about SlideShare – if you don’t have a presentation software you can set one up right there on SlideShare. Then you just download it to your desktop and upload it to another presentation platform.
Check out my SlideShare channel by clicking here.
AuthorStream is probably my favorite presentation sharing website, it’s not as large as SlideShare (yet) which brings its advantages (It’s MUCH easier to stand out.) The owner of the platform who is Harman Singh (I’m quite fond of him!) is really hands on and helps to promote the content of premium users.
The authorStream platform supports animations, slide transitions, narrations, audio, video and rehearsed timings from a PowerPoint presentation. I get quite a bit of traffic from this site especially when my content gets moved to “featured”.
If a large amount of people watch, share or download your presentation then your content can get chosen as featured and will be shown on the front page of the website as top content.
My content has been chosen many times and I’ve gotten a ton of traffic as a result. It’s always interesting to me to see what people respond to the most, sometimes I write content I think is a home run, but then I publish and hear crickets. Yet, other content that I don’t feel is my best work gets a ton of traffic.
This is why we need to listen to our audience tell us what we should write about. 🙂 As I write this blog post I have close to 20K followers, which most of those come once your content gets chosen as featured.
One presentation in particular, Search Marketing for Beginners was uploaded in July of 2014 and just recently started getting a little viral action and to date has almost 2500 views and was chosen as featured for a little while.

I also use PowerShow but truthfully, I haven’t been using this site for very long but I like the ease of uploading so I will continue to use it to see if I can get some traction from it. It’s growing and there’s gossip of new features on the horizon so I’ll stay with it for a while.
So far this is my most popular presentation on PowerShow, Niche Marketing – Who is Your Perfect Customer.
How to Make Presentations that Increase Website Traffic with Ease
You’re probably looking at this thinking, “Hey, this sounds great but it looks like a lot of work!” Well everything worthwhile takes a little work! But like anything else when it comes to planning out a marketing strategy once you get the platforms and a process set up it really is rather effortless.
We have a presentation template that we use for Perfect Marketing Equation and the only thing that gets changed out is the title and the main content pages. So it really is pretty easy. If you’ll look at my content across all the three channels you see that my presentations all look alike.
There are two reasons why I keep my templates consistent:
- Nobody cares, so don’t kill yourself creating dazzling presentations that have words flying left and right. The content just needs to be good it doesn’t have to be fancy. Also, keep in mind most views come from a mobile device so it needs to be simplified to give the viewer the best experience.
- It’s great for branding, when people see my stuff they recognize it. It’s more important to me to be memorable than overly fancy.
Check out the presentation here that was made from this blog post:
Notice that the last few pages are the same. This is a great way to ask people to follow you, share links to your social media and/or downloads you have available. These pages are stationary so they never have to be touched until they’re updated.
When you upload your presentations you’ll see an option to allow people to download them. I always get asked if I allow my presentations to be downloaded and the very quick answer is of course I do!
We create content to educate and share, if you’re going to put it out there you may as well let people download it. I think it’s awesome when my content gets downloaded! As a writer, I consider it a great compliment!
If You’re Going to Use Presentations to Increase Website Traffic You’ll Need Keywords
What’s great about presentations is they can come up easier in organic results but for that to happen when setting up your profiles you’ll need to have a very tight and consistent keyword structure in your marketing strategy. Each platform will ask you for keywords to classify your presentation slides. The keywords need to be based on criteria of searchers, not what you think the keywords are. Here are two free tools you can go to for keyword research:
Also, I want to share two great resources for further learning on choosing a keyword strategy, it really is a worthwhile education that will pay dividends! If you want to increase website traffic, you’re going to need to understand how keywords work. Here are two articles that I love and are very valuable:

- Cyrus Shepard of The Moz Blog – How to Rank: 25 Step SEO Master Blueprint
I hope you’ll get started using presentations as way to increase website traffic and compliment your marketing strategy!
